How to Choose an Auger Drive
The correct auger drive is selected by the carrier hydraulics, drilling diameter, ground conditions and auger interface—not machine size alone. Rev-Pile can help match the drive, mount, hoses, auger and extensions as a complete drilling system.
Know your machine but not your hydraulic specifications?
1. Verify Auxiliary Hydraulic Flow and Pressure
Record the carrier's auxiliary hydraulic flow in GPM and maximum pressure in PSI at the attachment circuit. These are more useful for drive selection than machine horsepower alone.
- Pressure primarily determines torque potential within the drive's rated hydraulic range.
- Flow primarily determines rotational speed.
The drive must stay within its rated pressure and flow limits. More flow does not automatically mean more torque.
2. Define Hole Diameter and Depth
Larger hole diameters and difficult ground conditions generally require more drive torque. Depth also affects whether auger extensions are needed and how much spoil must be removed efficiently.
3. Identify Ground Conditions
The drive and auger should be selected together. General earth, clay, mixed soils, frozen ground and fracturable rock can require different auger cutting systems and operating speeds.
4. Match the Drive Output to the Auger
Confirm the drive output and auger hub before ordering. Common interfaces in the Rev-Pile catalog include 2" Hex, 2.5" Hex, 3" Hex and 100 mm Square. Adaptors are available where appropriate, but a direct compatible interface is preferable when possible.
5. Match the Mount to the Carrier
The mounting system must match the machine or coupler. Excavators, mini excavators, skid steers and mini loaders use different mounting systems. Verify the carrier model and coupler before ordering.
6. Add Hoses, Extensions and Wearparts
A complete drilling package may also require hydraulic hoses/couplers, auger extensions and replacement teeth or pilots.
